My daughter is 19 and has an amazing sense of style – she’s always scrolling through Pinterest for inspiration. One day, she stumbled on a photo of this super cute crochet apple bag and fell in love with it. She even found video tutorial to recreate the bag, and I’m pretty sure the person who made that tutorial was inspired by the same photo. Seeing how excited she was, I thought, Why not surprise her with the bag as a Christmas gift? So, I grabbed my crochet hook and got to work!

Crafting the Crochet Apple Bag

To bring this idea to life, I used a 5 mm crochet hook and worsted weight yarn. For the cream sections, I had the perfect yarn on hand, but for the red yarn, I had to improvise. I used two strands of red yarn together, which worked wonderfully

One notable difference between my daughter’s inspiration and the design with instructions was the bottom part of the bag. In the original crochet apple bag design, the bottom part of the bag (where two halfs of apple slices meet) hangs loosely down, which my daughter loved. However, in the video instructions she found, the bottom part was pulled up a bit and wasn’t hanging loosely. To match the design she preferred, I added an extra row of crochet stitches (3sc, 3 hdc, 3dc, 3tr, 3 dc, 3 hdc, 3 sc) in the middle after the last round.

Two-step process of making a crochet apple slice bag: First, crochet bag parts laid out on a table. Second, hands tracing the outline of one apple slice piece onto fabric for the lining.

Adding the Finishing Touches

After stitching together the main parts of the bag (the strap was added later), I hand-sewed a cream-colored lining to match the yarn, giving the bag a polished look. I also crocheted a red pocket and sewed it to the lining—because every girl needs at least one pocket in her bag!

Next, I crocheted a playful worm, added a wire inside, and attached it to the bag for a whimsical touch.

While I’m happy with how it turned out, I now wish I had added a lining to the strap as well or made a double strap using single crochet stitches instead of half double crochet stitches. The current strap stretches slightly with use, but fortunately, my daughter doesn’t mind at all!

A Double Surprise: The Apple Wallet

To make the gift even more special, I crocheted a small crochet apple wallet and tucked it into the pocket as a double surprise. Of course, it wasn’t empty—I made sure to fill it with a little something extra to delight her.

The Best Reward

Seeing her reaction on Christmas morning was priceless. She absolutely loves the bag and has been wearing it every day since. Despite having a collection of bags to choose from, this one has become her favorite. There’s something truly special about creating a gift with your own hands and seeing it bring joy to someone you love. Every time my daughter wears her crochet apple bag, she carries a little piece of my love with her.
