2,25 mm crochet hook
red cotton yarn
soft stuffing
tapestry needle and scissors
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
sc2tog – single crochet decrease
st(s) – stitch(es)
rd – round
Beginning at the top of the heart, with magic ring:
Rd 1: 6 sc into the center of ring (6)
Rd 2: 2 sc in each st around (12)
Rd 3: (Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) repeat around (18)
Make a sl st in the next st, and cut the yarn leaving a 10” long tail.
You’ve just completed the first top half of the heart (Top A).
To continue, repeat rounds 1-3 to make another half (Top B), but don’t cut the yarn. (Image 1 – A)
Proceeding with round 4:
Rd 4 : Sc in next 9 sts of the Top B.
Merge the halves together: Begin by inserting the hook into the first stitch after the slip stitch made on Top A, then continue to single crochet in all 18 stitches. After that, insert the hook back into the Top B and work 1 single crochet in the next 9 stitches. This completes one round with a total of 36 stitches. (Image 1 – B)
With the tail from Top A close the gap between the two top halves. (Image 2)
Rd 5 : Sc around (36)
Rd 6 : (Sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog) repeat around (30)
Rd 7: (Sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog) repeat around (24)
Rd 8: (Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog) repeat around (18)
Rd 9: (Sc in next st, sc2tog) repeat around (12)
Stuff! (Image 3) While stuffing make sure the tail you used to close the gap is not stuck inside. This tail will be used later when you need to pull it tight, aiding in shaping the heart.
Continue working “sc in next st, sc2tog” until you heave 5 sts remaining.
Next, cut the yarn and pull it through the last loop. Then, pull the Top A tail tightly to shape the heart and hide the tail inside the heart with tapestry needle.
Using the tapestry needle, weave the tail through the front loops of the remaining 5 stitches, pulling it tightly to close. Finally, weave in the yarn end!
Congratulations! Your crochet heart is now complete!
